Description
Downhill Demesne (or Downhill House as it is commonly called) is sprawling 18th century mansion built by Frederick Hervey high up on a cliff overlooking Downhill Beach and the village of Castlerock in Northern Ireland.
Hervey, A.K.A. 'Earl-Bishop' was an eccentric man most known for his lavish parties which often ended with a practical joke or prank delivered by the Earl himself.
The mansion has some colorful history including a fire in 1851 which destroyed most of the main house. It was rebuilt in the 1870's then fell into disrepair after the second world war, eventually being acquired by The National Trust of Ireland who has opened it to the public.
It remains a popular tourist destination along the Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland and is worthy of a half day spent walking the extensive grounds and visiting the exquisite gardens.
